Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, her grandmother, and her godparents. Her father left her family. As a young girl, Ford was battling anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted by the word association. Ford began performing in her teen years and joined part of the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time however, Ford realised that it was not the right venue for her. Ford returned to Central School of Speech and Drama and on her fourth application she was admitted. Her classmate included Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford did not complete her degree in 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her first television appearance in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate made her television debut in 1991and appeared on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Tate was a regular performer on stage as well as a part of the company's 2000-2001 season. But Tate soon began to garner attention for her stand-up comic and added stand-up comedy to her repertoire in 1996.
